Analysis of NEV Drive Motor Tech Routes & Prospects

2025-09-17  Views:

Amid the booming development of new energy vehicles (NEVs), drive motors—core components—directly determine vehicle competitiveness through their technical routes and performance. Currently, the market mainly features the coexistence of two technical routes: permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) and alternating current asynchronous motors (ACAMs), each with unique advantages to meet different market demands.

PMSMs have become the mainstream choice in the global passenger car sector due to their high power density, high efficiency and excellent low-speed performance. However, their reliance on rare earth permanent magnet materials brings cost fluctuations and supply chain risks. ACAMs, with their robust structure, lower cost and good high-speed performance, maintain a position in some high-performance models and cost-sensitive fields.

Looking ahead, drive motor technology is developing toward high voltage, flat wire and deep integration. With the popularization of 800V high-voltage platforms, motor control systems face comprehensive upgrades. Flat wire winding technology is becoming a standard for next-generation motors due to its higher slot fill rate and efficiency. Meanwhile, the "all-in-one" integrated design of motor, electronic control and reducer has become a key path to reduce size, weight and cost.

To address rare earth resource challenges, the industry is actively exploring alternatives such as low heavy rare earth and rare earth-free permanent magnet motors. For electromechanical enterprises, this technological competition requires them to focus not only on performance improvement but also on balancing cost control and supply chain security. Early deployment of new materials, new processes and integrated technologies will be the key to seizing the future market.
